Reopening Update
Pub and AccommodationWe are excited to tell you that we will be opening outdoors initially on Monday 12th April 2021 at 12pm. We can still only operate a table service system with rule of 6 and you will not be able to order at the bar. From 17th May 2021 you will be able to sit indoors in our newly refurbished tap room and providing the numbers are still low we will be able to operate without any restrictions in place from 21st June 2021. Rooms can be booked from 12th April 2021 on a room only/self-catering basis and we can offer full B&B from 17th May 2021. Our hours of business will be different initially so please call us or check your social media for updates. -

The White Horse Inn, Great Barrow. Chester.
It Is The Perfect Hideaway
The pub is an old coaching inn c.18th century nestled in the centre of Great Barrow village ideally situated on the outskirts of Chester and a perfect base for visiting the historic city and all of the local attractions such as Chester zoo, Cheshire Oaks, roman walls, the cathederal, the blue Planet aquarium, ice cream farm and much much more.
We are still researching our history but thanks to a lovely local lady we have found out the following so far!!!
In 1838 it was owned by Samuel Higginson, and was an old thatched building before it was rebuilt by the Birkenhead Brewery.
in 1850 John Leach was Innkeeper, and in 1860 he is described as “farmer/Innkeeper”. Old Mrs Leach had a room at the back where dancing took place to concertina and tambourine and dances that “anyone could dance who couldn’t dance”. Village maidens went after Dad was in bed for “Mother didn’t mind” though the rector disapproved.
In 1893 when the Inn was being re-built, Albert Edward Spencer came to be Innkeeper and was here until his death in 1934.
Today, the pub has been renovated and updated with 4 guest rooms built into the old stables and hayloft and an additional self catering cottage built in 1906 and just a short walk from the pub.. The White Horse Inn still retains many of its original features.
